This beautiful Mercedes-Benz 280 SL, delivered in the Netherlands in 1969, is one of the few cars that has never been completely restored. Simply because that was not necessary due to way the owners looked after it: Superbe! According to the documentation, there have been in this case 4 owners.
The last owner thought the car was good, but comparing it with the other cars in his collection, a few things had to be done. The SL showed some spots were the sheet metal needed attention, and a professional restorer was brought in to unleash all their professionalism and expertise on the beautiful and fully matching numbers convertible. And it must be said that it was done perfectly. But to be honest, the job was a bit disappointing, because if you made one part beautiful, then other part look more worn or anyway not in the way it should look like. So as it often goes, in more than year and a half, the SL car was extensively overhauled. First in terms of sheet metal (only original sheet metal was used) and then the technique and interior. We cannot speak of a complete restoration, but of a very extensive one. All efforts were made and succeeded in preserving and honoring the originality as much as possible. The car is certainly not “over-restored” but it looks like it left the showroom yesterday. We love to see that “the soul” is still in the car.
We must say that the Pagoda drives superbe. The handling and performance were way ahead of its time in 1969, and even today it is a car that is fantastic to use for long journeys and it’s easy to drive in today’s traffic. There is plenty of luggage space and the easy-to-use soft top can be closed or opened in a minute. The car comes with the original black hardtop.
The owner’s collection has to be reduced, mainly due to a lack of space and therefore a new owner is now being sought for this fantastic 280 SL. Obviously, there comes with the car quite a few invoices and photos of the work that has been done, together with the original booklets, Wagenkarte and older invoices. Nice and complete, as it should be.
